CHASING GHOSTS

CLIFTON HILL.

Written as part of “Street Art Sunday” for Just Another Agency

Clifton Hill is an area that we haven’t had much of a chance to explore, yet after only walking a few minutes we were greeted by a huge amount of quality work. The cobbled lane ways, train line and station are littered with old school throw ups, tags and an assortment of pieces from local crews like ID and F1.

Some of the high lights from the area would have to be the big track side piece by MAYO, the fresh mural in the industrial estate by the F1 crew and the big track side drop from American writer DIRTY30.

SEEKING ASYLUM.

Written as park of “Street Art Sunday” for Just Another Agency.

When chatting with other photographers about great locations that you have shot around Melbourne and the subject of an Abandoned Mental asylum comes up, we were automatically intrigued.

The location in question is Larundel Mental Asylum. Digging a little deeper, we found that this was not just a institution for the Mentally ill, but a significant piece of of Victoria’s history.

Construction of the building started in the late 1930’s with the intention to becoming a mental heath facility, yet during the war it was used as temporary housing, a military hospital and training facility. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that it was finally utilized as an asylum and at its peak housed up to 750 patients across four main buildings.

In the many years since its closure, the structure has fallen victim to fire, weather and a general thrashing by kids looking to smash things. All these factors together with a million or two spray cans has turned the asylum into a impressive yet structurally unsound place to explore.

INSA.

One of our favorite UK artists, INSA has finally arrived on our shores. INSA’s presence in Melbourne has reminded us of the days when we would chase down graffiti and street art in London. It was a sticker that we first spotted in the suburb of Angel, we couldn’t quite figure out what the image was but we were intrigued.

We hunted down this image, finding walls and doorways in Shoreditch that were painted from top to bottom with the same image but repeated creating a hypnotic pattern. It wasn’t until we saw a canvas coupled with a pair of sneakers in a gallery show painted by the artist, that we finally took notice of what the design was and what the artist was all about.
INSA’s anonymity, being faceless makes you forget about the person behind the spray can and allows you to get lost in the subject matter of the work and any INSA fan knows this can be highly addictive.
While in town, INSA and local artsits RONE worked together to produce the awesome “Giffiti” featured above.

Geelong Freights.

Written as part of “Street Art Sundays” for Just Another Agency

Painting trains is a huge part of the origins of graffiti, inspired by the style made famous by the New York Subway writers, artists all over the world infiltrated train stations and holding yards to bust out work of their own.

Over the years, there have been huge crack downs by the authorities in an attempt to put a end to train writing. This is particularly evident here in Melbourne where the penalties are some of the harshest in Australia, so seeing a painted train running the lines these days can be a rarity.

The freight lines are a different story all together. With yards containing hundreds of carriages, security is stretched thin, giving writers much more time to get up. As the carriages are being used for commercial purposes, there is no point in the freight companies spending the money buffing the trains so pieces can stay untouched for years.

The Geelong freight yard is a great example with hundreds of meters of heavily layered trains.

EASTER HUNT.

Written for Just Another Agency as part of “Street Art Sundays”.

On a day when most people are hunting for chocolate eggs, we decided to step out and hunt down some street art. Abbotsford is a place we haven’t explored that often, so we went back too see what was on offer on the walls next to Victoria Park Station. Other than the fact that almost every local writer and a few internationals have hit this space, it’s the decades of layers that we love.

To passers by this section might look like a cluttered mess of pieces, tags and rollers but with some of the work dating back 20 years it is a great example of how graffiti styles have changed over time.

Keep a Camera Handy.

Written as part of “Street Art Sundays” for Just Another Agency:

Out on a Sunday running errands and after grabbing coffee in Carlton, we headed to the Ikea in Richmond where we spent some time walking in a maze dodging kids and just trying to hold onto our sanity. From the third level where our car was parked we could see down into the small private lot behind Bike Force. We could see some wicked pieces running up the alley so we headed down to check it out.

We had shot this location in the past but it can be easy to forget that the city’s walls are forever changing creating infinite possibilities for photo ops. Effective murals with cool colours done by SDM and ID crews and a tagged couch by PRESTO decorate this lot and alley now.

Gettin’ Da Vaporz        (ThreeTwo)

Written as part of “Street Art Sundays” for Just Another Agency.

One of the perks of traveling around the world is not just exploring amazing and iconic locations, but having the privilege of shooting one of your favorite crews, Da Mental Vaporz painting three times across two countries. This crew out of Paris is made up of nine extremely talented artists BOM.K, BLO, BRUSK, DRAN, GRIS1, ISO, JAW, KAN and SOWAT.

Each member has their own individual style, yet they play off each other so well and create huge murals typically with a gruesome yet comical theme. The first time we saw them in action was at the graffiti event “Meeting Of Styles” in London’s Holloway.

Next was in Melbourne’s China Town, where the Crew smashed the FAD Gallery wall.

The third and most recent time was yet again in Melbourne, where a few members of the crew hit another large wall in a Fitzroy Lane.

Home Court Heroes.

Written as part of “Street Art Sundays” for Just Another Agency.

Last year Boy Wolf ran a popup shop at Richmond’s Paradise Hills Gallery with a good amount of success. Not yet satisfied, he decided to step it up a notch this year with the aptly named “Home Court Heroes 2: Revenge of the Boywolf Popup Shop”.

This event, hosted again by Paradise Hills not only featured Boy Wolf wares, but also more artists than you can cram into a single space. The walls were hit by Heesco, Mysterious Al, Unwell Bunny, Ohnoes, Staying Creative, A.Mac, Hancock, Ruskidd, Eleven, E.L.K., Plane and Peche just to name a few.

As you could imagine, this line up drew in quite a crowd. Everybody enjoyed a few cold beers, a hell of a lot of live art and walked away with some fresh threads.

DOING LAUNDRY.

Written as part of “Street Art Sundays” for Just Another Agency.

It had been a while since we did some urban exploration so when we caught sight of this abandoned laundry, we thought it was a good place to get back into the swing.

This space is located in plain sight on a major road, yet until you have a closer look you wouldn’t know it was disused  After ducking branches and squeezing through a door restrained by vines you are greeted with a surprisingly large room. Although there are no machines left we could tell that this place was not just an ordinary laundry, but a commercial scale dry cleaners. Now it’s home to a family of pigeons and empty spray cans.

Even though almost everything was trashed it was still a great location to look at and explore.

Elsty Styles.

There is always plenty of illegal graffiti on show in the suburbs especially along the train lines, but it was great to see a large public area being opened up to some talented locals.

You wouldn’t notice it at first but right next to Elsternwick Station is a there is a walkway that runs the length of a small shopping promenade. Originally dark and lifeless area, it is now sporting work from the likes of Staying Creative, Loveling, Ohnoes, Dose, Burg and Leboeuf.

It was great to see that all the artists worked together, using matching colour schemes to produce a cohesive mural that stretches across both walls of this cozy little spot.

Toy To The World.

We and a bunch of artists from The Arts Hole Studio recently participated in a great charity project called Toy To The World.

Each artist is given a blank bear and can customize it in anyway they want, all the bears are exhibited in a group show and each bear is auctioned off with all proceeds going towards aids research.

We made a bear each for the show, a Cyborg Bear & Gumball Bear (pictured above).

We had a total blast working on our bears and it was great to be involved in a project that supports such a worthy cause.
